Congratulations to Manuel on successfully defending his Masters thesis and graduating from TMU.
Manuel's major work during his MS degree was a very cool project where we investigated potential roles of calorie restriction and fasting in myocardial infarction protection via extracellular vesicles. It's a preliminary study using in vitro models which we hope to follow up in the future. Interestingly, we did find that EVs from calorie restricted mice, or 3-5d water-only fasted human volunteers, offered superior protection of cardiomyocytes from hypoxia.
The first publication "Assessment of circulating extracellular vesicles from calorie-restricted mice and humans in ischaemic injury models" was published in Journal of Extracellular Biology and is available, open access, at: 10.1002/jex2.86
